Can I clean this wall mold myself or need professional?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment seems to be making this damp, earthy smell that's getting worse. I just pulled the sofa away from the wall in my living room in Jumeirah and found a patch of black and green fuzzy mold about the size of my hand. This has probably been growing since the humidity spiked a few weeks ago. How urgently do I need to get this professionally cleaned, or is this something I can handle myself this weekend?

That patch behind the sofa is a classic sign of condensation buildup, exacerbated by Dubai's high humidity and constant AC use. The damp, earthy smell confirms active microbial growth.
For a patch that size, you can attempt to clean it yourself if you are in good health. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and safety glasses. Scrub the area with a mixture of detergent and water, then disinfect with a solution of one part household bleach to ten parts water. Ensure the room is well-ventilated during and after the process. The critical step is identifying and stopping the moisture source; this is almost always condensation from the cold wall meeting humid room air, often worsened by furniture blocking airflow. However, given the location behind furniture and the persistent smell in the AC, this visible patch is likely just the tip of the issue. Mold thrives in wall cavities where condensation forms on chilled AC ducting, meaning the growth inside could be far more extensive. A professional inspection with a borescope can assess the wall cavity and AC system for hidden colonization that DIY cleaning cannot address. For health safety and to prevent rapid regrowth, an assessment is strongly recommended to understand the full scope. |
