Can I clean toddler's bedroom mold myself or call professional?« Back to Previous Page

My toddler has been having a runny nose and a persistent cough for the last couple of weeks, and I just found what looks like a patch of black mold in the corner of her bedroom closet, behind some storage boxes. We’re in an older building in Jumeirah and the humid weather lately has made the whole apartment feel damp. Is this something I can clean myself with vinegar, or do I need to call a professional company here in Dubai to test it?

Given the toddler's persistent symptoms and the humid conditions in older Jumeirah buildings, this situation warrants a careful approach. For a small patch (under one square foot) discovered behind boxes, a DIY clean can be attempted. Use a solution of white vinegar or a diluted bleach mix (1 part bleach to 10 parts water), scrubbing the area thoroughly while ensuring the room is well-ventilated and the child is elsewhere. Wear an N95 mask and gloves.

However, the visible patch is often just the tip of the issue. The high humidity and condensation from year-round AC use in Dubai mean the mold’s root system (mycelium) can penetrate porous surfaces like drywall or plaster behind the wall. DIY cleaning only addresses the surface, and the mold will almost certainly return if the moisture source isn't eliminated.

With a toddler experiencing respiratory symptoms, a professional assessment is strongly advised. They can identify the extent of the hidden growth and the specific moisture source—whether it’s a condensation line, a small leak, or rising damp. They should perform a lab analysis to identify the mold species, which is critical for understanding potential health risks and the required remediation protocol. This diagnostic step is what separates a lasting solution from a temporary cosmetic fix.
