Can I clean toddler's mold with bleach or need professional?« Back to Previous Page

My toddler’s room in our Jumeirah villa has had this persistent damp smell for a couple of months, and I just found a patch of black spots behind his dresser where it’s a bit damp from the AC unit. I’m worried it’s affecting his allergies. Is this something I can safely clean with bleach myself, or do I absolutely need to call a professional mold inspection company here in Dubai?

For a toddler's room in a Jumeirah villa, the combination of high humidity and constant AC use creates a perfect environment for mold. The damp spot behind the dresser is a classic sign of condensation from the AC unit, which is very common here.

While a small patch (under one square foot) can be cleaned with a diluted bleach solution, this is a temporary fix that doesn't address the moisture source. Bleach can irritate a toddler's airways and often only removes surface discoloration, leaving the root structure intact. For a child with existing allergies, disturbing the mold during cleaning can release spores and temporarily worsen symptoms.

Given the persistent damp smell and the occupant's age, a professional inspection is strongly advised. They will identify the specific mold species through lab analysis, which is crucial for understanding the health risk. More importantly, they will diagnose and resolve the underlying condensation issue—whether it's an AC drain line problem, insufficient insulation, or poor ventilation—to prevent it from returning. The Dubai climate means this problem will likely recur without addressing the root cause. A proper inspection provides a long-term solution for your child's health.
