Can I clean toddler's room mold myself or call professional?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mould in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind the clothes. It must have been growing for a while and I’m worried because my toddler sleeps in our room. With the humidity lately, I’m scared it will spread. Is this something I can clean myself with bleach or do I need to call a professional company to handle it?

For a small patch (under one square foot) that you've found early, a DIY clean is often possible. However, the location behind clothes in a closet and the presence of a toddler significantly elevate the concern, making a professional assessment the recommended first step.

In Dubai's climate, high humidity and constant AC use create ideal conditions for mold. The visible patch is likely just the fruiting body; the root structure (mycelium) can penetrate porous surfaces like drywall and insulation. Bleach is not recommended—it only removes surface discoloration and can worsen the problem by adding moisture. Instead, use a vinegar or hydrogen peroxide solution and scrub with a microfiber cloth.

The critical risk here is cross-contamination. Disturbing the mold by moving clothes and cleaning can release a large number of spores into the bedroom air, which your toddler would then breathe. A professional inspector can conduct an air quality test to determine the spore count in the room and identify the mold species, which dictates the health risk and required remediation method. For a child's environment, this verification is crucial.

If the mold returns after a thorough DIY cleaning, it indicates a persistent moisture source—likely condensation from the AC or a minor leak—that must be identified and fixed. For any area larger than a square foot, a history of water damage, or for peace of mind with a young child, hiring a company with a microbiology lab for testing and certified remediation protocols is the safest course of action.
