Can I clean wardrobe mold with vinegar or need a pro?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom in our Jumeirah villa has felt really humid lately, and I just found a bunch of black spots in the back of the wardrobe where we store our winter clothes. It's been spreading over the last few weeks and I'm worried it's ruining our stuff. Is this something I can clean with vinegar myself, or do I need to call one of those professional mold remediation companies here?

It depends on the extent of the growth and the underlying cause. For a small, surface-level patch (less than a square foot) that has appeared due to a temporary humidity spike, a vinegar solution can be a decent first attempt. However, the persistent humidity in your Jumeirah villa and the fact it's spreading suggests a deeper issue, likely condensation from your AC or a minor, unseen leak.

Vinegar can disturb surface mold but often fails to kill the roots embedded in porous materials like wood or drywall. The high humidity will cause it to return quickly. For a problem of this nature, a professional assessment is wise. They will identify and address the moisture source—often an AC unit set too cold, creating extreme temperature differentials and condensation inside walls—which is the only way to prevent recurrence.

Proper remediation involves containment to prevent spores from spreading to other parts of the home and using registered antimicrobials. For valuable items like winter clothing, specialized cleaning is required to salvage them effectively. Since you've noted spreading over several weeks, the problem is likely beyond a DIY fix. A certified inspector can provide a clear diagnosis and a scope of work, which is the most reliable path to protecting your home and belongings.
