Can I fix AC leak mold myself or need profesional« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my bedroom has been leaking a bit onto the carpet for a couple of weeks and now I’m seeing a small black splotch, maybe a foot wide, spreading near the wall. It has a really damp, earthy smell that’s strongest in the mornings. Is this something I can tackle myself with a vinegar spray from the supermarket, or do I need to call in a professional cleaning company to deal with it properly?

A small visible patch often indicates more extensive mold growth inside the AC unit or under the carpet padding. In Dubai's high humidity, mold spreads rapidly through porous materials, and the persistent damp smell confirms active growth.

For a leak-related issue, DIY cleaning with vinegar is a temporary surface fix at best. It won't address the root cause—the ongoing moisture from the AC leak—or the hidden colony. You must first stop the leak by having an AC technician repair the drain line or condensation pan.

After the leak is fixed, the carpet and underlying padding must be pulled up to assess the damage. If the mold is only on the concrete slab, a thorough cleaning may suffice. If it has penetrated the carpet backing or padding, those materials must be discarded. Given the smell and spread, a professional inspection is strongly recommended to determine the full extent and prevent recurrence. They can also verify with moisture meters that the area is completely dry after remediation.
