Can I fix bathroom mold myself or call a pro?« Back to Previous Page

Our guest bathroom in JVC doesn't have a window and the musty smell has been getting worse since the humidity kicked in a few weeks ago. I just pulled back the silicone sealant around the shower and found a bunch of black spots underneath it that won't scrub off. Is this something I can fix myself with a cleaner from Ace Hardware, or do I need to call in a professional?

Based on your description, this is a classic case of hidden mold growth exacerbated by the Dubai climate. The high humidity and constant use of AC, which can create significant temperature differentials and condensation, provide an ideal breeding ground for mold, especially in windowless bathrooms like yours in JVC.

The black spots under the silicone are a significant red flag. Scrubbing surface-level mold is ineffective when the growth is subsurface. This indicates moisture has penetrated behind the sealant, likely into the grout and wall substrate. DIY cleaners from a hardware store will only address the surface aesthetic, not the root cause of the moisture or the hidden fungal colony. Improper handling can also aerosolize spores, spreading the contamination to other parts of the bathroom.

For this level of infestation, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. UAE regulations, particularly in Dubai, emphasize the importance of proper indoor air quality and remediation to prevent health issues and structural damage. Our certified inspectors use moisture meters and thermal imaging cameras to identify the full extent of the water intrusion and microbial growth, which is almost always worse than what is visible.

For a permanent solution, the compromised silicone and potentially affected grout must be mechanically removed, the area treated with EPA-approved biocides, and then properly resealed. Our company, Saniservice, specializes in this exact process. We ensure the remediation is complete and provide solutions like improved ventilation to prevent recurrence.
