Can I fix bedroom AC mold myself or need a pro?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my bedroom unit has been leaking a little bit onto the carpet for a couple of weeks, and now I’m seeing a visible black mold patch behind the headboard. We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed it, and I'm worried about my allergies acting up. Is this something I can fix myself with cleaning spray from Ace Hardware, or do I absolutely need to call a professional for mold remediation, and what’s the typical cost for a small area like this in Dubai?

Persistent AC leaks create ideal conditions for mold, especially in Dubai's humidity. The visible patch behind your headboard is likely just the surface manifestation; moisture has probably wicked into the carpet pad and possibly the wall itself.

For a leak ongoing two weeks, DIY cleaning spray is insufficient. It only addresses surface discoloration, not the root moisture problem or hidden growth. You must first fix the AC leak completely. Then, the carpet should be pulled back to assess the extent of damage to the underside, pad, and flooring. Porous materials like carpet backing and drywall often require cutting out and replacing if significantly wet.

Given your allergy symptoms and the duration of the leak, a professional inspection is strongly recommended to determine the full scope. Remediation for a small area like this is typically a focused job. Costs are generally reasonable for contained areas, but you should request an onsite assessment for an accurate scope and quotation. The process should include containment, HEPA vacuuming, antimicrobial treatment, and proper disposal of contaminated materials to prevent spore dispersal.
