Can I fix bedroom mold myself or call a professional?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom in our Jumeirah villa has been feeling really damp for a couple of months, especially on the cooler walls behind the wardrobe. We’ve started noticing small black speckles appearing on the back of our leather shoes and bags stored there. Is this something I can tackle myself with a vinegar spray from the supermarket, or is it time to call in a professional mold inspection company?

What you're describing in your Jumeirah villa is a classic case of condensation-induced mold, a very common issue in Dubai due to our high humidity and constant AC use. The cool wall behind the wardrobe is a condensation point, creating the perfect damp environment for mold to grow on organic materials like leather.

For a small, surface-level patch (under one square foot), you can attempt to clean it yourself with a solution of detergent and water, not vinegar. Vinegar is often ineffective on porous materials and doesn't address the root moisture problem. However, given that the issue is behind furniture and has been developing for months, the visible speckles are likely just the surface manifestation of a larger colony.

This is a case for a professional inspection. The inspector will use moisture meters and thermal imaging to locate the exact source and extent of the dampness within the wall, which is critical. In villas, this can sometimes be linked to a minor leak in the external wall or a compromised vapor barrier. They can also take air and surface samples for lab analysis to identify the mold species, which determines the appropriate remediation protocol. Simply wiping the surface often just disperses harmful spores into the air without solving the underlying condensation issue, allowing it to return. A proper assessment will provide a targeted plan to fix the moisture source and safely remove the growth.
