Can I fix black bathroom grout mold myself or need professional?« Back to Previous Page

The grout between the tiles in our Jumeirah villa's master bathroom has started turning black, and it's been spreading since the weather got more humid a few weeks ago. I tried scrubbing it with bleach, but it just faded a little and came back darker. I'm worried it's behind the walls. Is this something I can fix myself with a stronger cleaner, or do I need to call in a professional mold remediation company?

Black grout in bathrooms is extremely common in Dubai's humid climate, especially during summer months. The high humidity combined with condensation from showers creates an ideal environment for mold growth.

If bleach only faded it temporarily, the mold has penetrated the porous grout. Scrubbing with stronger cleaners often damages the grout further, creating more pores for mold to root deeper. For a small, surface-level area, a dedicated grout cleaner containing fungicides (not just bleach) applied with a stiff brush can be effective. Always ensure the bathroom is well-ventilated during and after treatment.

However, the fact it returned darker and is spreading suggests a more serious issue. In villas, this mold is frequently a sign of persistent moisture behind the tiles, potentially from a slow pipe leak or inadequate waterproofing during construction—a common issue here. If the mold is returning this aggressively, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They use moisture meters and borescopes to check for water damage in the wall cavity without destructive tearing down of tiles initially.

Attempting a DIY fix on a deeper problem will be ineffective and could allow hidden structural damage to worsen. Remediation companies follow standards like the IICRC S520 to properly contain the area, remove contaminated materials, and address the root moisture source to prevent recurrence. For a confirmed case of widespread hidden mold, this is not a DIY project.
