Can I fix black bathroom grout myself or call professional?« Back to Previous Page

The grout between the tiles in my master bathroom in Jumeirah has been turning black for a couple of months now, and no matter how much I scrub with bleach, it just comes back within a week. It’s definitely worse since the weather got more humid. Is this something I can fix myself with a specific product from ACE Hardware, or is it time to call in a professional cleaning company?

Black grout returning after bleach cleaning is a classic sign of embedded mold growth, not just surface staining. Dubai's high humidity, especially during summer months, creates a perfect environment for mold to thrive deep within the porous grout. Bleach only removes surface discoloration; it cannot penetrate to kill the root structure.

For a DIY attempt, use a hydrogen peroxide-based grout cleaner or a paste of baking soda and vinegar, applied and left to sit for at least 30 minutes before scrubbing with a stiff brush. This is more effective than bleach. However, if the discoloration returns within a week, the growth is likely extensive behind the tiles or in the wall cavity itself.

Persistent, rapidly returning mold in a high-humidity area like a bathroom often indicates a deeper moisture issue, such as a small leak behind the shower wall or inadequate sealing. In such cases, a professional inspection is warranted to assess the extent of the problem, identify the moisture source, and perform remediation that addresses the root cause, not just the visible symptom. They can also verify if the issue is contained to the grout or if the wall itself requires treatment.
