Can I fix black shower grout myself or call a pro?« Back to Previous Page

The grout between the tiles in our master bathroom shower has started turning black, and there's a constant damp smell no matter how much I clean. We're in an older building in Bur Dubai and it's been getting worse since the humidity really kicked in a few weeks ago. I've tried scrubbing with bleach, but it just comes back. Is this something I can fix myself with a specific product from ACE, or is it time to call a professional?

Based on your description, this is a classic case of mold colonization, not just surface staining. The persistent damp smell and the rapid return after bleaching are key indicators. In Dubai's high-humidity climate, especially in older Bur Dubai buildings where ventilation is often inadequate, bathrooms are prime locations for mold growth. The grout is porous, allowing mold to penetrate deep into the material. Bleach only bleaches the surface pigment and does not kill the root structure (hyphae) embedded within; the water content can even feed the mold, causing it to return stronger.

While DIY options like concentrated hydrogen peroxide solutions or EPA-approved fungicidal cleaners from ACE Hardware can provide a temporary fix, they are unlikely to offer a permanent solution if there is underlying moisture or the colonization is extensive. For a problem that persists despite cleaning, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. Our certified inspectors use moisture meters and thermal imaging cameras to identify the source of the moisture—which could be a tiny crack in the grout, a failing sealant, or even a hidden leak in the plumbing behind the tiles—that you cannot see.

UAE health and building regulations emphasize maintaining a hygienic indoor environment to protect occupant health. Remediation must be conducted to standards that prevent spore dispersal into other living areas. For a definitive solution that addresses the root cause and ensures the mold is safely and completely removed, professional remediation is the most effective path.

I recommend you call our specialists at Saniservice for a comprehensive inspection. We can diagnose the exact cause and provide a remediation plan tailored to your specific situation. Call us at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com.
