Can I fix black shower grout myself or need professional?« Back to Previous Page

My bathroom's grout in the shower has been turning black for a couple of months now, and no matter how much I scrub with bleach, it just comes back within a week. It's the ensuite in our villa in Jumeirah, and the window is tiny so the ventilation isn't great. Is this something I can fix myself with a specific product from ACE, or do I need to call in a professional to deal with it properly?

Black shower grout in Dubai villas is almost always mold, fueled by the high humidity and poor ventilation common in many bathrooms here. Bleach only bleaches the surface and doesn't kill the root structure penetrating the porous grout, which is why it returns so quickly.
For a small, surface-level patch, you can try a dedicated grout mold remover from a hardware store, but this is often a temporary fix. The core issue is the moisture. You must run the exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower and wipe down wet walls to remove standing water. A squeegee is essential. If the black discoloration is widespread, has a musty odor, or if the grout is soft or crumbling, the mold has likely penetrated deeply. In these cases, scrubbing disturbs it and can spread spores. Professional assessment is needed to determine if the grout and possibly the underlying substrate need remediation and replacement to solve the problem permanently. They can also assess your ventilation to recommend solutions like a more powerful fan, which is often necessary for Dubai's climate. |
