Can I fix my AC's rattling noise or call a technician?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my master bedroom has started making a faint rattling sound whenever the fan kicks on, and it’s been driving me crazy for the past three nights. It’s a split unit and the noise seems to be coming from the indoor part mounted on the wall. It still cools fine, but the sound is getting worse. Is this something I can fix myself by cleaning a filter or tightening a screw, or should I just call a technician straight away?

Good question. That faint rattling from your indoor split AC unit is a common complaint here in Dubai, and it's rarely something to ignore. Given the extreme operating conditions our systems face—constant high load, fine dust (that famous Dubai sand), and humidity—even small issues can escalate quickly.
While it's tempting to think it's just a loose screw or a dirty filter, a rattling noise specifically on fan start-up often points to a failing or unbalanced blower wheel. Over time, dust and grime accumulate unevenly on the fins, throwing it off balance. It could also be a sign of worn-out motor bearings. Attempting a DIY fix on the internal fan assembly is not recommended; you risk damaging the delicate coils or misaligning components, which leads to a much costlier repair. For your own safety and to protect the unit, the best first step is to power the AC off completely at the circuit breaker. You can check and clean the air filter if you haven't recently—a clogged filter strains the entire system—but this is unlikely to resolve a mechanical rattle. Given the noise is worsening, I strongly recommend a professional inspection. In the UAE, all refrigerant-handling and electrical work must be performed by a technician certified by the Dubai Municipality and the Refrigeration and Air-Conditioning Department (RADAC). We see units every day where a simple rattling noise was the first sign of a major failure. For a proper diagnosis and a fix that complies with local regulations, it's best to call a certified pro.
