Can I fix recurring bathroom mold myself or hire a pro?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bathroom in the JVC apartment has this black speckled mold growing along the ceiling and in the corners where the walls meet. It's been getting worse since the weather got really humid a couple of months ago, and I scrub it with bleach spray but it just comes back a week later. Is this something I can fix myself with a better product, or do I need to call in a professional?

Recurring bathroom mold in Dubai is often a symptom of persistent humidity and inadequate ventilation, not just a surface issue. Bleach only removes the visible discoloration on non-porous surfaces but does not address the root moisture problem or the hyphae (roots) growing within porous materials like drywall and paint.

For a recurring problem, start by improving ventilation. Run the bathroom exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower and ensure it is actually moving air (hold a tissue to it to check). Wiping down wet walls and ceilings with a squeegee immediately after use can also help. For cleaning, a dedicated EPA-approved fungicidal cleaner is more effective than bleach for porous surfaces, as it can penetrate and kill the organism.

However, if the mold returns within days or weeks, the moisture source is likely ongoing condensation within the wall or ceiling cavity, which is common in JVC apartments due to the temperature differential between air-conditioned rooms and humid void spaces. This requires professional assessment to identify the condensation point and the full extent of the growth, which is often more widespread than what is visible. Remediation involves correcting the insulation or ventilation flaw, then safely removing and replacing affected porous building materials to prevent it from returning. A professional inspection can determine if the growth is superficial or systemic.
