Can I fix recurring black mold myself or call a pro?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet on the exterior wall. I wiped it with bleach but it came back darker within a couple of weeks, and now the dampness has started to stain a few of my shoes. Is this something I can tackle myself with a product from ACE Hardware, or do I need to call a professional mold removal company to check for a bigger issue?

Recurring black mold after a DIY bleach clean indicates an unresolved moisture source, which is a common issue in Dubai's climate. Bleach only removes surface discoloration; it doesn't kill the root structure or address the underlying dampness causing the regrowth.
The location on an exterior wall is a major red flag. This strongly suggests a leak in the building envelope or persistent condensation from the temperature differential between the air-conditioned room and the hot, humid exterior. This is not a problem a surface cleaner can fix. For a small, isolated patch, a targeted approach with a dedicated mold removal product (like Concrobium) from a hardware store can be a first step. However, since it has already returned and is damaging belongings, a professional assessment is strongly recommended. They will use moisture meters and thermal imaging to find the exact moisture intrusion point, which is critical for a permanent solution. In many cases here, the fix involves sealing the exterior wall, improving insulation, or addressing AC condensation drainage. A reputable remediation company, particularly one with its own microbiology lab, can also test the mold to confirm the species, which informs the proper removal protocol and helps assess any potential health risks, especially since it's in a bedroom. |
