Can I fix recurring black shower mold myself?« Back to Previous Page
|
The grout between the tiles in my master bathroom shower has been getting these black spots for the last couple of months, and no matter how much I scrub with bleach, it keeps coming back. It's in a corner that doesn't get much sunlight and always feels a bit damp. Is this something I can fix myself with a specific product from ACE Hardware, or do I need to call a professional cleaning company to handle it properly?

Recurring black mold in shower grout is extremely common in Dubai due to high humidity and constant AC use creating condensation. The corner's persistent dampness and lack of sunlight create an ideal environment for it to return, even after bleaching.
For a DIY approach, standard bleach often fails because it only removes surface discoloration without addressing the root cause. The mold's hyphae can penetrate deep into the porous grout. A more effective treatment is a hydrogen peroxide-based cleaner or a dedicated grout mold remover, available at most hardware stores. After application, let it soak for the recommended time and scrub with a stiff brush. Crucially, you must then address the moisture source. Run the bathroom exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower and wipe down the walls to remove condensation. Improving air circulation is key. If the mold returns after a thorough DIY treatment with proper moisture control, the issue may be deeper. In many older Dubai villas, moisture can wick into the grout from behind the tiles if the waterproofing membrane has failed. In such cases, topical cleaning is only temporary. A professional inspection can identify if the problem is superficial or requires regrouting or repairing the shower's sealant and waterproofing to provide a permanent solution. |
