Can I fix recurring shower grout mold myself?« Back to Previous Page

The grout between the tiles in my master bathroom shower has started turning black and green, and it’s spreading up the corner wall. I’ve tried scrubbing it with bleach spray, but it comes back within a couple of weeks. Is this something I can fix permanently myself with a specific product from ACE Hardware, or is this a sign of a bigger problem that needs a professional?

Recurring shower grout mold is common in Dubai due to the high humidity and condensation from daily hot showers. While bleach removes surface discoloration, it doesn't kill the mold's root structure (hyphae) penetrating the porous grout. For a permanent fix, you need to address both the surface and the moisture source.

For a DIY attempt, use a hydrogen peroxide-based mold remover or a concentrated anti-fungal cleaner from a hardware store, not just bleach. Scrub thoroughly with a stiff brush, but the key is ensuring the area stays dry. Run the bathroom exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower and wipe down wet walls with a squeegee. A dehumidifier or improving ventilation can help significantly.

If the mold returns quickly despite these measures, especially if it's spreading up the wall, it's a strong indicator of a bigger problem. The moisture source could be a hidden leak behind the tiles or, more critically, water damage inside the wall cavity. In such cases, scrubbing the surface is ineffective. A professional inspection is needed to identify the hidden moisture source using tools like moisture meters and, if necessary, a lab analysis to determine the mold type. This is the only way to achieve a permanent solution.
