Can I fix recurring shower mold myself or hire pro?« Back to Previous Page

The grout between the tiles in my master bathroom shower has been turning black with mold for the last couple of months, especially in the corners. It’s in a windowless bathroom in my Jumeirah Village Circle apartment, so it never really dries out completely. I've tried scrubbing it with bleach spray, but it just comes back a week later.
Is this something I can fix permanently myself with a specific product from Ace Hardware, or is it time to call in a professional cleaning company?

Recurring black mold in a JVC bathroom's grout is extremely common due to Dubai's high humidity and the lack of ventilation in windowless bathrooms. The condensation from your AC fighting the ambient moisture creates a perpetually damp environment where mold thrives.
Bleach only removes surface discoloration but doesn't kill the root structure (hyphae) penetrating the porous grout. For a permanent fix, you need to address both the moisture and the biological growth. Start by improving drying; run the bathroom exhaust fan for at least an hour after every shower and consider a small desiccant dehumidifier. For cleaning, skip bleach and use a dedicated EPA-approved fungicidal cleaner or a paste of baking soda and distilled white vinegar, scrubbing deeply into the grout lines. If the mold returns within weeks despite these measures, the issue is likely behind the tiles or in the wall cavity, which DIY cannot reach. In Dubai apartments, persistent shower mold frequently stems from failed sealant or microscopic cracks allowing moisture into the substrate. A professional inspection with a borescope can identify these hidden moisture sources. Companies with microbiology labs can also test to confirm the mold type, as some species like Aspergillus are more persistent and require specific remediation protocols. For a recurring problem in a damp environment, a professional assessment is often the only way to achieve a long-term solution. |
