Can I handle this mold myself or call a pro?« Back to Previous Page

The walls in our guest bedroom have started to feel cold and damp to the touch, and I’m seeing these tiny black speckles in the corner near the window. It’s been like this since the humidity really spiked last week. Is this something I can tackle with a dehumidifier and some bleach, or is this a sign I need to call a professional for mold remediation?

Based on your description of cold, damp walls and visible black speckling, this is a classic sign of a mold colony initiating growth, almost certainly triggered by the recent high humidity we've had. In the UAE's climate, this is an extremely common issue, especially in rooms with external walls where thermal bridging can cause condensation.

While a dehumidifier is an excellent tool for prevention, it is not a remediation device for an active problem. Using bleach is strongly discouraged. It is primarily water, which can actually feed the mold root structure hidden within the porous wall material, and its fumes are hazardous in an enclosed space. It also only bleaches the surface appearance without addressing the underlying colony.

The critical question is the extent. Surface mold on non-porous materials like glass or tile can sometimes be cleaned. However, on porous surfaces like drywall or plaster, the hyphae (root structure) penetrate deeply. Your case—especially with the wall feeling damp—suggests moisture is within the wall cavity itself. This requires professional assessment to determine the source (e.g., condensation, leak) and the extent of contamination.

UAE regulations, particularly from Dubai Municipality, have strict guidelines for indoor air quality and mold remediation to ensure it is handled safely without cross-contaminating the entire property.

My professional recommendation is to call for an inspection. We can identify the moisture source, assess the contamination level with tools like moisture meters and borescopes, and prescribe the correct solution. Attempting DIY on a case like this often leads to a much larger, hidden problem down the line.
