Can I remove AC-caused black mold myself or need professional?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom closet on the outside wall has developed a ton of black mold, and I'm sure it's from the AC unit. We only spotted it yesterday when pulling out winter clothes, but it looks like it's been growing behind the shelves for a while. Is this something I can tackle myself with bleach and vinegar from the supermarket, or do I need to call a professional mold removal company here in Dubai?

Black mold caused by AC condensation is a common issue in Dubai's climate, where high humidity and constant AC use create ideal conditions for growth. For a significant infestation discovered behind shelves, a DIY approach is not recommended. The visible mold is likely just the surface; the main colony is probably deeper within the wall or insulation, which you cannot properly access or treat with supermarket products.

Bleach and vinegar are ineffective on porous surfaces like drywall and wood. They only bleach the surface color and cannot kill the roots, guaranteeing rapid regrowth. More importantly, aggressive scrubbing of a large colony will release a massive amount of spores into your bedroom air, posing a significant inhalation risk.

The correct protocol involves first identifying the moisture source. A professional will use a thermal imaging camera to pinpoint the exact condensation leak within the AC system or a breach in the vapor barrier. The contaminated porous materials, like the back of the shelf and affected drywall, must be carefully removed and bagged for disposal. The area is then HEPA-vacuumed, antimicrobial-treated, and sealed.

For this scenario, a professional inspection is strongly advised to assess the full extent and prevent systemic recurrence. Look for a provider that offers a clear remediation plan, follows DM or DHA guidelines for healthy environments, and can provide before-and-after testing from an accredited lab to verify the space is truly safe.
