Can I remove AC mold myself or need a pro?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my bedroom has been leaking a bit and now I’ve spotted a small patch of black mold, about the size of my hand, on the wall behind the headboard. I only noticed it a couple of days ago but with this humidity, I’m worried it’ll spread fast. Is this something I can tackle myself with bleach from the supermarket, or is it time to call in one of those professional mold removal companies?

As a certified mold remediation specialist operating in Dubai, my professional recommendation in this scenario is to call a professional. Here's why. The black patch you've described, while currently small, is a symptom of a larger issue: a continuous moisture source from your AC leak. In our extreme humidity, this mold will absolutely spread, often into the wall cavity where you cannot see it.

Using supermarket bleach is highly discouraged. It is primarily water, which can actually feed the mold root structure (hyphae) deep within porous materials like drywall. Bleach also only bleaches the surface spores, creating a false sense of security while the colony continues to grow unseen. Furthermore, improper cleaning can aerosolize toxic mold spores, contaminating your entire bedroom and HVAC system.

Dubai Municipality has specific guidelines for indoor air quality and mold remediation to protect resident health. A professional company like Saniservice follows these protocols precisely. Our process involves: 1) Containing the area to prevent cross-contamination, 2) Identifying and rectifying the root moisture cause (the AC leak), 3) Safely removing and disposing of contaminated porous materials (your section of drywall), 4) HEPA vacuuming and antimicrobial treatment of the area, and 5) Verification through post-remediation testing.

Given the persistent moisture from AC condensation and our high year-round humidity, a DIY approach carries significant health and property risks. For a proper assessment and guaranteed remediation, it is time to call in the professionals.
