Can I remove AC mold myself or need a pro in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our bedroom has been leaking a bit and now we have a bunch of black mold spreading on the wall behind the wardrobe. We’re in a villa in Jumeirah and I’m worried about it getting worse with the humidity. Is this something I can tackle myself with bleach from ACE, or do I absolutely need to call a professional company, and what’s the typical cost for a small job like this?

Based on the conditions you've described—black mold, an AC leak, and a villa in Jumeirah's high humidity—this is not a DIY project. Using bleach from a hardware store is strongly discouraged. Bleach is ineffective on porous surfaces like drywall, as it only bleaches the surface mold while leaving the root structure intact. More critically, it poses a severe health risk when mixed with other common cleaners and does not address the moisture source.

The black discoloration is a significant concern, often indicating Stachybotrys chartarum, a toxigenic mold species that requires professional handling. The leak from your AC unit is the primary moisture source that must be identified and repaired; otherwise, the mold will relentlessly return. Dubai's climate, with its intense humidity and year-round reliance on AC systems, creates a perfect environment for rapid mold proliferation behind walls and furniture.

In accordance with UAE health and safety guidelines, proper remediation requires containment to prevent cross-contamination, specialized biocides to neutralize the mold at its roots, and industrial-grade HEPA filtration to remove airborne spores. The cost for a localized job like this is typically reasonable, but a professional inspection is crucial to assess the full extent behind the wardrobe and within the wall cavity.
