Can I remove AC mold myself or need a professional?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment in Jumeirah Park has been leaking a bit onto the carpet in the bedroom for the last couple of weeks. I finally pulled the corner of the carpet back and found a patch of black mold about the size of a dinner plate on the concrete floor underneath. I’m worried it's making us cough at night. Is this something I can tackle myself with bleach and a scrub brush, or do I need to call one of those professional mold remediation companies?

Based on the scenario you've described with the AC leak and visible mold growth on the concrete slab in Jumeirah Park, I strongly advise against attempting a DIY removal with bleach. Here’s why:

The black discoloration indicates a significant moisture issue. Concrete is porous, meaning the mold's root structure (hyphae) has likely penetrated deep beneath the surface. Surface cleaning with bleach will only bleach the visible spores, leaving the active colony intact to regrow. More critically, disturbing the mold by scrubbing will aerosolize a high concentration of spores, drastically worsening your indoor air quality and exacerbating the cough you're experiencing.

In Dubai's climate, where high humidity and constant AC use create perfect conditions for condensation and mold growth, improper remediation can lead to a rapid and more widespread recurrence. Furthermore, Dubai Municipality has specific protocols for addressing indoor environmental hazards to ensure they are resolved safely and effectively.

For a situation like this, a professional inspection and remediation are essential. A certified team, like ours at Saniservice, will first contain the area to prevent cross-contamination, use industrial-grade HEPA filtration to clean the air, and employ specialized antimicrobial agents to eliminate the mold at its root within the concrete. We also identify and rectify the primary moisture source—in your case, the AC leak—to prevent future problems.
