Can I remove Al Barsha closet mold myself or need professional?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our villa in Al Barsha for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind some boxes. It’s been extra humid lately and I’m worried it’s spreading. Is this something I can clean myself with bleach or vinegar, or do I need to call a professional mold inspection company here in Dubai?

Small patches of surface mold on non-porous materials can often be cleaned by a homeowner. However, the mold behind your boxes is a warning sign of a larger humidity issue, which is very common in Al Barsha villas due to our climate. The visible patch is likely just the tip of the iceberg.

For a closet mold situation like yours, start by moving all items out to assess the full extent. Clean hard surfaces with a vinegar or hydrogen peroxide solution; avoid bleach as it doesn't prevent regrowth. The critical step is identifying and correcting the moisture source. In a closet, this is often caused by an exterior wall cooling down from AC and condensing humid air, or from a small, unnoticed water leak.

If the mold covers more than one square meter, has penetrated drywall or wood, or if you smell a persistent musty odor after cleaning, a professional inspection is recommended. They use moisture meters and thermal cameras to find hidden dampness that you can't see. In Dubai, remediation companies should follow international standards like the IICRC S520, which focuses on containing the area and removing the source, not just surface cleaning.

Given that the mold was hidden and the villa is two years old, the underlying cause is likely chronic condensation. Without fixing that, it will return. A professional assessment can pinpoint the exact cause and scope, which is a wise investment for a long-term solution.
