Can I remove apartment mold myself or need a pro?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots growing on the wall behind our bedroom wardrobe. It's an interior wall in our Marina apartment and it's been extra humid lately. I'm worried it's making us all a bit sniffly. Is this something I can tackle myself with vinegar and bleach, or do I need to call one of those professional mold removal companies here?

That depends on the mold's extent and cause. Small, surface-level patches on non-porous surfaces from a one-time spill can sometimes be managed with careful DIY. However, mold behind furniture on an interior wall in a Marina apartment is a significant red flag, as it points to an ongoing moisture issue.

In Dubai's high humidity, this is rarely a simple surface problem. The wall itself may be holding moisture from condensation or a hidden leak. Bleach only removes surface discoloration and doesn't address the root cause or kill the roots (hyphae) deep in porous materials like drywall or plaster. Vinegar can be more effective on some species but is not a definitive solution for established growth.

Given the location and your family's symptoms, a professional assessment is strongly recommended. They will identify the exact moisture source—often poor insulation creating a cold spot for condensation or a leak from adjacent plumbing—and the mold species. Remediation involves containing the area to prevent spore spread, safely removing contaminated porous materials like affected drywall, and using industrial-grade HEPA filtration to clean the air. The critical final step is rectifying the moisture source; otherwise, the mold will return within weeks. For verifiable results, choose a provider that offers before-and-after testing from an accredited lab.
