Can I remove bathroom black mold myself or hire professional?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the black mold that's been spreading along the grout in our master bathroom shower. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed it getting really bad over the last few weeks, especially since the humidity kicked in. It's in a weird spot behind the shower caddy that never fully dries out. Is this something I can tackle myself with a bleach solution from the supermarket, or do I need to call in a professional cleaning company here in Dubai?

Small surface mold on non-porous tile grout can often be addressed yourself. For a patch under 10 square feet, scrub with a dedicated grout brush and a solution of one part household bleach to four parts water. The key is addressing the moisture source—that perpetually damp spot behind the caddy must be dried completely and kept dry with improved ventilation.

Given the location's persistent dampness and your children's symptoms, a DIY clean may only be a temporary fix. The visible surface mold is often just the fruiting body; the root structure (mycelium) can penetrate deeper into the grout or behind the tiles. In Dubai's high humidity, this internal growth can rapidly return after surface cleaning.

For health concerns with vulnerable individuals, a professional assessment is prudent. They can use moisture meters to check for water intrusion behind the wall and recommend if regrouting or sealing is necessary. If the area is larger than a square meter or if there's any suspicion the mold has spread into the wall cavity, a professional remediation company should be consulted to ensure it's contained and removed properly, preventing spores from spreading through your home.
