Can I remove bathroom mold myself or need a professional?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold growing in the corner where the shower meets the ceiling in our Deira apartment. It's been incredibly humid lately and I'm worried it's spreading. Is this something I can tackle myself with a bleach spray from the supermarket, or do I need to call a professional cleaning company to handle it properly?

Based on the conditions you've described in your Deira apartment, this is a common yet potentially serious issue. The UAE's high humidity, especially during summer, combined with year-round AC use, creates significant condensation, particularly in bathrooms with insufficient ventilation. This is a prime environment for mold, especially the black mold (likely Stachybotrys or Aspergillus) you're seeing.

For a small, surface-level patch (less than 1 square foot), a DIY approach can be attempted. However, standard bleach is not recommended. It is mostly water, which can feed the mold roots hidden within porous surfaces like drywall or grout, and its fumes are hazardous in enclosed spaces. Instead, use a dedicated EPA-approved fungicide or a solution of distilled white vinegar and water. Scrub the area thoroughly, ensuring you wear an N95 mask, gloves, and eye protection to avoid spore inhalation. The critical step is to address the moisture source. Run the bathroom exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after showering and ensure your AC unit is properly serviced to effectively remove humidity from the air.

However, given that the mold is on the ceiling—indicating sustained moisture saturation—and you are concerned about spreading, a professional inspection is strongly advised. Mold colonies can penetrate deep into building materials, and what you see is often just the surface manifestation. Disturbing it incorrectly can aerosolize spores throughout your apartment.

Our company, Saniservice, specializes in mold inspection and remediation in line with Dubai Municipality guidelines. We conduct air and surface sampling to identify the spore type and concentration, then perform containment-based removal using HEPA filtration to prevent cross-contamination, followed by antimicrobial application and humidity control solutions.
