Can I remove bathroom mold myself with vinegar in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah apartment for 2 years and just noticed these black spots growing in the grout between the wall tiles behind the toilet. It’s been incredibly humid lately and the bathroom's small window doesn't seem to provide enough ventilation. Is this something I can tackle myself with a vinegar solution, or do I need to call in a professional cleaning service here in Dubai?

For small, surface-level mold on non-porous surfaces like tile grout, a DIY approach with white vinegar can be effective in Dubai's high humidity. The key is to act quickly before it penetrates. Scrub the area with a stiff brush and undiluted vinegar, let it sit for an hour, then rinse with water. Always wear a mask and gloves during the process.

However, vinegar only kills surface mold and does not address the root cause. In Dubai's climate, constant AC use creates significant condensation, and bathrooms without robust ventilation are prime for regrowth. If the mold has returned after previous cleaning, covers a large area (more than a square meter), or you notice a persistent musty smell, the issue is likely systemic. This indicates moisture is trapped within the wall or behind the tiles.

In such cases, a professional inspection is recommended to identify the source of the moisture—whether it's a hidden plumbing leak, insufficient sealing, or inadequate ventilation. Surface cleaning alone will be a temporary fix. For health safety, especially with black mold that can cause respiratory irritation, a lab test can identify the species and inform the correct remediation protocol, which may involve removing and replacing compromised grout or sections of the wall.
