Can I remove bedroom closet mold myself or call professional?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind some storage boxes. It seems to have gotten worse since the weather got more humid last month. I'm worried it might be spreading but I'm not sure if it's a big enough deal to call a professional or if I can just clean it myself with bleach. Is this something I can safely handle on my own?

It depends on the size and cause. For a small patch (under one square foot) that appeared due to temporary humidity, you can clean it yourself. However, the location behind boxes suggests a persistent moisture issue, which is common here with condensation from AC units and high ambient humidity.
For a DIY attempt, use a vinegar solution or a dedicated mold cleaner, not bleach. Bleach only removes surface discoloration and does not kill the mold roots in porous materials like drywall. Scrub the area thoroughly, let it dry completely, and address the moisture source. Ensure the closet is well-ventilated and not packed tightly against walls, as this traps humid air. Given the climate in Dubai, mold often returns if the underlying cause isn't fixed. This is typically a sign of high relative humidity in that room or a temperature differential causing condensation. If the mold returns after cleaning, covers a larger area, or you notice a musty smell, a professional inspection is recommended. They use moisture meters and thermal cameras to find the hidden source of the moisture, which is often the critical step DIY misses. For health safety, especially with black mold and if household members have respiratory sensitivities, err on the side of a professional assessment. |
