Can I remove bedroom mold myself with a toddler?« Back to Previous Page

The wall behind my wardrobe in our bedroom has started showing these black spots, and I’m pretty sure it’s mold. It’s been getting worse since the humidity spiked a few weeks ago. I’m handy with tools, but my wife is worried about the health risks for our toddler. Is this something I can safely tackle myself with bleach and a scrub brush, or do I absolutely need to call a professional mold removal company here in Dubai?

Black mold behind furniture in a humid climate like Dubai is a common issue, but with a toddler, the approach needs to be more cautious. The health risks from disturbing active mold spores are real, especially for young children who are more vulnerable to respiratory irritation.

For a small patch (under one square foot), a DIY approach can be effective if done carefully. However, bleach is not recommended; it is mostly water and can feed mold roots inside porous materials like drywall. Instead, use a dedicated mold remover or a solution of white vinegar and water. Crucially, you must contain the area. Seal off the bedroom from the rest of the house, wear an N95 mask, gloves, and goggles, and ensure your toddler is nowhere near the area during and for several hours after cleaning.

Given the mold is on a wall behind a wardrobe, the source is likely condensation from temperature differences or a hidden leak. Simply cleaning the surface will not stop it from returning. The wardrobe must be moved to inspect the full extent and address the moisture source, which is often poor insulation or AC condensation issues prevalent in UAE buildings.

For any visible mold larger than a square foot, or if it returns after cleaning, a professional assessment is strongly advised. They can perform moisture mapping to find the exact cause and conduct air quality tests to ensure spores haven't spread into the room your toddler sleeps in. This diagnostic step is key to a permanent solution, not just a temporary cleanup.
