Can I remove black bathroom grout mold myself in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

The grout between the tiles in my master bathroom in Jumeirah Village Circle has started turning black, and it’s been spreading for a couple of months. I tried a bleach spray, but it just faded for a day and came back worse. I’m worried it’s behind the walls or under the vanity. Is this something I can handle myself with a stronger product from ACE Hardware, or should I just call a professional cleaning company in Dubai, and what would a typical cost be for a small bathroom?

Black grout in bathrooms is often a sign of persistent dampness, not just surface dirt. Dubai's high humidity and constant AC use create a perfect environment for it, as the AC cools the air but doesn't necessarily remove the moisture that condenses on cooler tile surfaces.

A bleach-based cleaner is a common first step, but it typically only bleaches the surface of the mould without killing the root structure embedded in the porous grout. This is why it often returns, sometimes more aggressively. For a small, contained area, you can try a dedicated grout mould remover from a hardware store; look for an alkaline-based product rather than a bleach-based one. Scrub it into the grout with a stiff brush and let it sit for the recommended time. However, if the mould has been spreading for months and you suspect it's behind the vanity or walls, surface cleaning is a temporary fix.

Persistent, recurring mould like this suggests a underlying moisture issue, such as inadequate sealing, a tiny leak from a pipe, or water wicking behind the tiles. In these cases, a professional inspection is advised to locate the moisture source. Without addressing that, the mould will continue to return. A reputable service will use moisture meters and borescopes to check behind walls non-invasively before any cleaning begins. The cost for a small bathroom assessment and remediation is typically based on the extent of the issue found, not just the room size, so it's best to request an on-site evaluation for an accurate scope of work.
