Can I remove black bathroom grout mold or need a professional?« Back to Previous Page

The grout between the tiles in my bathroom in Jumeirah Village Circle has started turning black, especially behind the toilet where it's a bit damp. I've tried wiping it with a bleach spray a couple of times, but it just comes back within a week. I'm worried the humidity is making it worse. Is this something I can tackle with a stronger cleaning product, or should I just call a professional cleaning company to deal with it properly?

Black grout mold in bathrooms is common in Dubai due to the high humidity and condensation from showers. What you're seeing is likely a surface mold that can be managed, but its persistence indicates a deeper issue.
Bleach is often ineffective as it only bleaches the surface and doesn't kill the roots embedded in the porous grout. For a DIY attempt, use a dedicated hydrogen peroxide-based mold cleaner or a paste of baking soda and vinegar. Scrub vigorously with a stiff brush and ensure the area is completely dry afterward by running the exhaust fan for at least an hour post-shower. However, if the mold returns quickly or covers a large area (more than a square meter), or if you notice a musty smell, the moisture problem is likely beyond surface condensation. In such cases, the mold may have penetrated behind the tiles, which requires professional assessment. A proper inspection can determine the moisture source and extent, and remediation involves specialized techniques to dry the structure and remove the contamination at its source. For verifiable results, a company with its own microbiology lab can test to confirm the mold type and that it has been properly addressed. |
