Can I remove black bathtub mold myself or need a pro?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed this black, speckly mold creeping out from behind the silicone sealant around our bathtub in Deira. It’s been extra humid lately and the bathroom doesn't have a window, so I guess that’s why it’s getting worse. Is this something I can tackle myself with bleach and a scrub brush, or do I need to call a professional cleaning company to handle it properly?

Based on your description, this is a common issue in Dubai, especially in older buildings in areas like Deira. The black, speckly mold is likely Stachybotrys chartarum or Aspergillus niger, which thrive in the high humidity and lack of ventilation you've described. The year-round AC use creates significant temperature differentials, leading to condensation that gets trapped behind non-porous sealant, creating a perfect breeding ground.
While a DIY approach with a bleach-based solution may remove the surface discoloration, it is often ineffective for a persistent problem. Bleach is mostly water, which can actually feed the mold roots growing within the porous grout and wall material behind the sealant. This leads to rapid regrowth. Furthermore, improper scrubbing can release a high concentration of toxic spores into the air, posing an inhalation risk. For a lasting solution, the contaminated silicone sealant must be completely removed, the underlying substrate professionally treated with EPA-approved, non-toxic biocides, and the area thoroughly dried using industrial-grade air movers and dehumidifiers. Finally, a new, high-quality mold-resistant sealant must be applied. Given the extent you've described ("creeping out"), a professional inspection is strongly recommended to assess potential hidden growth. Our certified inspectors use moisture meters and thermal imaging cameras to identify the full scope of the problem, ensuring it is remediated according to Dubai Municipality guidelines.
