Can I remove black mold behind my wardrobe myself?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it’s from the black spots I just found behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed it, but it must have been growing for a while, probably from the humidity. What’s the most effective way to get rid of it and is this something I need to call building management for, or can I handle it myself with a good product from ACE?

Yes, you can attempt to remove it yourself, but the correct approach is critical to avoid spreading spores and ensure it doesn't return. The persistent Dubai humidity, especially when combined with condensation from year-round AC use, creates perfect conditions for this growth behind furniture.

For a small area (under one square meter), a DIY approach may be sufficient. Start by isolating the area; seal the room from the rest of the house and turn off the AC to prevent air circulation. Wear an N95 mask, goggles, and gloves. Carefully move the wardrobe to assess the full extent. Mix a solution of detergent and water—avoid bleach, as it only lightens the colour and doesn't kill the roots. Scrub the area thoroughly, then dry it completely with a fan. The most important step is to identify and fix the moisture source; it's often condensation from a cold wall or a hidden seepage.

However, given that your children are experiencing respiratory symptoms, this indicates the mold may already be affecting your indoor air quality. Disturbing it without proper containment could temporarily make this worse. For health concerns or if the affected area is larger than a square meter, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They can perform an air quality test to identify spore types and concentrations, which is crucial information if symptoms persist. In a rental apartment, you should also notify building management, as the source could be a leak from another unit or an building envelope issue they are responsible for fixing. A product from ACE can help with cleaning, but it cannot diagnose the root cause or assess potential health risks.
