Can I remove black mold behind toilet myself?« Back to Previous Page

My bathroom has had this musty smell for weeks and I finally found the source – a patch of black mold growing behind the toilet where it meets the wall. It’s in my guest bathroom in our Jumeirah villa, which we don’t use daily, so I’m not sure how long it’s actually been there. With the humidity rising again, I’m worried it’s spreading. Is this something I need to get professionally cleaned immediately, or can I handle it myself with a vinegar solution this weekend?

That depends on the size and whether it's a surface issue or a sign of a deeper problem. For a small patch (under one square foot), DIY can be effective.

First, identify the moisture source. In Dubai's humidity, it's often condensation from cold water pipes in the wall or a tiny, unnoticed leak from the toilet seal. Wipe the area dry before any treatment.

A simple DIY solution is white vinegar. Spray it on, let it sit for an hour, then scrub with a stiff brush. Avoid bleach; it lightens the colour but doesn't kill the root structure, so mould often returns.

However, if the patch is large, has a furry texture, or returns quickly after cleaning, it indicates moisture is trapped within the wall. This is common with the condensation from our year-round AC use creating temperature differentials. In that case, professional inspection is needed to assess the wall cavity and the true extent. They use moisture meters and borescopes to see behind surfaces without unnecessary damage. For a villa in Jumeirah, addressing the root cause is crucial to prevent structural issues and potential cross-contamination to other rooms.
