Can I remove black mold from AC myself in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page
|
The AC in my apartment seems to be blowing out a weird, damp odor, and I just found patches of black mold around the vent in my master bedroom here in Jumeirah. It’s been getting worse since the weather got more humid a couple of weeks ago. Is this something I can tackle myself with a bleach spray from the supermarket, or do I absolutely need to call a professional mold removal company in Dubai?

For small, surface-level patches (under one square foot), you can attempt a DIY clean using a vinegar solution or a dedicated EPA-approved mould cleaner, not bleach. Bleach evaporates quickly and doesn't penetrate porous surfaces, making it ineffective for long-term mould removal and potentially releasing harmful fumes in an enclosed space.
However, mould around an AC vent is rarely an isolated issue. It's typically a symptom of excess moisture within the AC system itself, often caused by a clogged condensate drain line or inadequate insulation on the ducting—both very common in Dubai's climate where ACs run constantly. Simply wiping the visible mould does not address the root cause, and the problem will almost certainly return. Given the damp odour you're describing and the recent humidity spike, the mould inside the unit and ductwork is likely more extensive than what's visible. Disturbing it during a DIY clean can aerosolize spores and spread them throughout your apartment. For a systemic issue like this, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They can identify and rectify the moisture source, contain the area to prevent cross-contamination, and use HEPA filtration during the cleaning process. In Dubai, reputable remediation providers should be able to produce a detailed report, often supported by lab analysis, to verify the mould has been properly addressed. |
