Can I remove black mold from grout myself or need a pro?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah apartment for two years and just noticed some black speckles growing in the grout between the tiles behind our toilet. It’s a small area, maybe the size of my hand, and it doesn’t scrub off easily with regular cleaner. With this humidity, I'm worried it will spread. Is this something I can tackle myself with a specific product from ACE, or do I need to call in a professional cleaner?

For a small patch like that, you can likely handle it yourself. The black speckles are typically mold, but it's the persistent moisture from showers and condensation in Dubai's humidity that allows it to thrive, not just a surface issue.

Start with a dedicated grout cleaner or a paste of baking soda and vinegar. For tougher cases, a diluted chlorine bleach solution (one part bleach to four parts water) applied carefully with an old toothbrush can be effective. Always ensure the bathroom is well-ventilated during and after cleaning; open a window and run the exhaust fan for several hours.

If the mold returns quickly after a thorough cleaning, the moisture source isn't controlled. This is common when there's hidden moisture behind the tiles or in the wall, which a surface clean cannot address. In such cases, especially in older buildings, a professional assessment is needed to diagnose the root cause, like a leaking pipe or insufficient waterproofing. A professional service with a microbiology lab can also identify the mold type, which is important if anyone in the household has respiratory sensitivities. The goal is to fix the dampness, not just scrub the visible growth.
