Can I remove black mold myself in Dubai's humidity?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah villa for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold behind the wardrobe in the master bedroom, probably from a small, hidden AC leak. It's about the size of a dinner plate and the wall feels slightly damp. I'm handy with DIY stuff but I'm worried the Dubai humidity will just make it come back if I don't do it right.
Is this something I can safely tackle myself with bleach and a scrub, or do I absolutely need to call in a professional mold remediation company here?

DIY removal can be effective for a small, surface-level patch like this, but Dubai's high humidity is your main adversary. The key isn't just removing the visible growth; it's eliminating the moisture source and ensuring the wall cavity dries completely to prevent immediate regrowth.
For a plate-sized area from a suspected AC leak, start by fixing the leak—this is non-negotiable. Turn off the AC unit serving that room and have an HVAC technician address the condensation drain issue. To clean, use a detergent solution, not just bleach, as bleach only removes the surface colour and does not kill the roots on porous materials like drywall. Scrub the area thoroughly. However, the critical risk is what you cannot see. If the wall behind the wardrobe feels damp, the moisture and mould have likely penetrated the gypsum board. In Dubai's climate, simply surface-cleaning a damp wall is a temporary fix. The mould will almost certainly return from within the wall cavity if it is not properly dried with professional-grade dehumidifiers and air movers. If the wall is soft, the stain has spread, or you detect a musty odor after cleaning, the remediation has moved beyond DIY. A professional assessment is warranted to determine the extent of the damage inside the wall. Reputable remediators use moisture meters and thermal imaging to verify the wall’s core moisture levels and will set up containment to prevent spore dispersal during removal, which is a significant health risk if done improperly. |
