Can I remove black mold myself or call a professional?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our bedroom has been leaking a bit and I just pulled back the corner of the carpet and found a patch of black mold about the size of a dinner plate underneath. It's been really humid the last few weeks and I think that made it worse. Is this something I can tackle myself with bleach from the supermarket, or do I need to call a professional mold removal company in Dubai to handle it properly?

Given the climate in Dubai, with its high humidity and constant AC use, the conditions you've described are a textbook breeding ground for mold. The leak from your AC unit has provided the moisture, and the trapped environment under the carpet has allowed a significant colony to develop.

While small surface mold on non-porous materials can sometimes be addressed with a bleach solution, your situation is different and more serious. The mold has penetrated the carpet backing and likely the underlying padding, which are porous materials. DIY methods like supermarket bleach are ineffective on porous surfaces; they only bleach the surface color and do not kill the root structure (hyphae) of the mold. Furthermore, improper handling can aerosolize the spores, spreading the contamination to other areas of your bedroom and HVAC system, posing a significant health risk.

In the UAE, proper mold remediation is not just about cleaning; it's about addressing the source and ensuring the environment is returned to a safe, hygienic standard. This requires specialized equipment: HEPA vacuums, antimicrobial agents, and air scrubbers to contain and remove the infestation safely. Crucially, the AC leak must be identified and repaired by a certified HVAC technician to prevent immediate recurrence.

For a patch the size of a dinner plate, which indicates a established colony, and given its location from an AC leak, we strongly recommend a professional inspection and remediation. Our certified team at Saniservice can conduct a thorough assessment, contain the area, safely remove the contaminated materials, and hygienize the space to ensure your family's health is protected.
