Can I remove black mold myself or hire a professional?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing at night and I just found a patch of black mold in the corner of their bedroom closet. It's been extra humid lately and I think it's been growing there for a while behind the boxes. Is this something I can tackle myself with bleach from the supermarket, or do I need to call in a professional cleaning service?

Based on the symptoms you've described and the presence of visible black mold, I strongly advise against a DIY removal attempt with supermarket bleach. This is a serious situation that warrants a professional inspection, especially given the health of your children.

The black patch you see is likely just the fruiting body; the root system (hyphae) can penetrate deep into the building materials (drywall, plaster) which bleach cannot reach. Bleach is also primarily water, which can actually feed the mold root system behind the surface, causing the problem to return worse than before. More critically, improper cleaning can aerosolize the toxic mold spores, spreading them throughout your home's AC system and significantly increasing your family's exposure, exacerbating respiratory issues like the coughing you've noticed.

In Dubai's climate, with its extreme humidity and constant AC use, conditions are perfect for mold growth. AC units can act as super-spreaders if contaminated. A professional assessment is crucial to determine the moisture source (likely condensation or a minor leak in this case), the extent of the contamination, and the specific species of mold, as some types of "black mold" (like Stachybotrys) are particularly hazardous.

For the safety of your family, I recommend you call in a certified professional. We at Saniservice use industrial-grade HEPA filtration, antimicrobial coatings, and techniques that contain the area to prevent cross-contamination. Our process includes identifying and rectifying the moisture source to ensure the mold does not return.
