Can I remove black mold myself or need a pro?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing for the past couple of weeks and I just pulled their wooden wardrobe away from the wall in our Sharjah apartment. I found a whole patch of black fuzzy mold growing on the back of it. I tried wiping it with vinegar, but the smell came right back. Is this something I can tackle myself with a stronger cleaner, or do I need to call a professional mold removal company?

Based on the description of your situation—black, fuzzy mold on a wooden wardrobe, recurring after a DIY cleaning attempt, and your children exhibiting respiratory symptoms—this is a scenario that strongly warrants a professional inspection and remediation.

The black, fuzzy appearance is characteristic of Stachybotrys chartarum, a toxigenic mold species that can produce mycotoxins. Its presence, coupled with the health symptoms in your children, elevates the risk significantly. Vinegar is often insufficient for porous materials like wood, as the fungal hyphae (the root system) penetrate deep into the material. The immediate return of the smell indicates the mold colony is still active and thriving.

In the UAE's climate, this is a common issue. Our high humidity, especially in coastal areas like Sharjah, combined with year-round AC use, creates massive condensation problems. This condensation often forms on cold walls behind furniture, providing the perfect, hidden moisture source for mold growth.

While surface cleaning with a stronger biocide like diluted bleach (1 part bleach to 10 parts water) may seem like a solution, it is a temporary fix that addresses only the visible spores. It does not eliminate the root structure within the wood or address the underlying moisture problem. Disturbing the mold during cleaning can also aerosolize a high concentration of spores and mycotoxins, potentially worsening your family's exposure and health issues.

For a confirmed case of toxigenic mold, especially with health impacts, professional remediation is not just recommended; it is the safest course of action. We use industrial-grade HEPA air scrubbers to contain spores, specialized antimicrobial agents to eradicate the colony at its roots, and moisture meters to identify and advise on resolving the source.
