Can I remove black mold myself or need a pro?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing for a few weeks and we can't figure out why. I finally pulled out the wardrobe in our master bedroom and found a huge patch of black mold on the wall behind it, probably from a hidden leak in the AC condensation pipe. I'm really worried about their health and know I need to get this sorted fast. Is this something I can handle myself with cleaners from Ace Hardware, or do I absolutely need to call a professional mold remediation company, and roughly how much would that cost for a single room?

Based on your description, this is a serious situation that absolutely requires professional intervention. The persistent coughing in your children is a significant health indicator that should not be ignored.

Black mold, often referring to Stachybotrys chartarum, produces mycotoxins that can cause severe respiratory issues, allergic reactions, and prolonged exposure is particularly harmful to children. Attempting a DIY removal with store-bought cleaners is highly inadvisable for several reasons. First, improper handling will agitate and aerosolize the spores, spreading the contamination throughout your home's air and HVAC system, potentially worsening your family's symptoms. Second, you have identified a moisture source (the suspected AC condensation leak); without professionally addressing this root cause, the mold will simply return, making any cleaning effort futile. Bleach or surface cleaners cannot penetrate porous materials like drywall and plaster to kill the root structure (hyphae) of the mold.

In Dubai's climate, with high year-round humidity and constant AC use, condensation issues are a primary driver of mold growth. Remediation must be handled by certified professionals using industry-standard protocols: first containing the area with negative air pressure to prevent cross-contamination, then safely removing and disposing of contaminated porous materials (like your wall), HEPA vacuuming, and finally applying professional-grade antimicrobial solutions.

For a single room with wall contamination, professional remediation cost can vary but typically starts from AED 2,500 to AED 5,000+, depending on the extent of the damage and the required reconstruction. This is a critical investment in your family's health.

I strongly recommend you cease use of the room and contact a certified professional immediately for an inspection and quote. Our team at Saniservice is trained in Dubai's specific environmental challenges and can provide a comprehensive assessment and remediation plan.
