Can I remove black mold myself or need a pro?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom closet in our Jumeirah villa has had a damp smell for a while, but we just discovered black mold spreading on the back wall and on some of our shoes. It’s gotten much worse since the humidity spiked a few weeks ago. We're worried about health risks and the cost. Is this a job we can handle ourselves with bleach, or do we absolutely need to call a professional mold removal company, and what’s the typical cost for a small room?

Based on your description of a recurring damp smell and visible black mold spreading in your Jumeirah villa, I strongly advise against a DIY approach. The climate in Dubai, characterized by extreme humidity and year-round AC use, creates a perfect breeding ground for mold. What you see on the surface is often just the tip of the iceberg; the mold roots (hyphae) can penetrate deep into porous building materials like drywall and plaster.

Using bleach is a common misconception. It is ineffective on porous surfaces as it only bleaches the visible growth on the surface while leaving the root structure intact. Furthermore, bleach is mostly water, which can actually feed the mold problem and cause it to return stronger. For a proper remediation, specialized antimicrobial agents designed to penetrate and eradicate the organism at its root are required.

In the UAE, improper handling can violate health and safety standards for property habitability. A professional inspection is critical to determine the moisture source—often a leaking AC condensate drain line, infiltration through the wall, or severe condensation—and the full extent of contamination. For health reasons, especially with black mold present in a bedroom, professional containment and air scrubbing are essential to prevent spores from spreading to other parts of the home during removal.

For a small room like a closet, professional remediation cost can vary but is a worthwhile investment to protect your health and property.
