Can I remove black mold myself or need a professional?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind some shoes. It probably started after that really humid week last month, and now my wife has been waking up with a stuffy nose and headaches. Is this something I can tackle myself with bleach from the supermarket, or do we need to call in a professional mold cleaning company?

Based on the symptoms your wife is experiencing—stuffy nose and headaches—this is a clear health indicator that the mold colony is actively releasing spores into your bedroom's air. In the UAE's climate, where high humidity and constant AC use create ideal conditions for mold, a small visible patch is often just the tip of the iceberg. The moisture source, likely condensation from the AC or a minor leak, has probably affected the wall cavity behind.

Using supermarket bleach is strongly discouraged. It is primarily water, which can feed the root structure of the mold hidden within porous materials like drywall or concrete. Furthermore, bleach's harsh fumes can exacerbate respiratory issues and it is ineffective for permanent removal, often causing the mold to return more aggressively.

For a situation involving health symptoms and potential hidden growth, a professional inspection is mandatory. Our certified inspectors use moisture meters, thermal imaging cameras, and air quality tests to identify the full extent of the contamination and the precise moisture source, which is critical for a permanent solution. Remediation then involves containing the area with negative air pressure, HEPA vacuuming, and applying specialized antimicrobial agents approved for use in the UAE.

Given the health risks and the complexity of a complete eradication, I recommend you cease DIY efforts and contact our team at Saniservice for a comprehensive assessment. Call 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com to schedule an inspection.
