Can I remove black mold myself or need a professional?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the black mold growing along the bottom of the wall in our master bedroom. It’s been spreading for a couple of weeks now, ever since the humidity really kicked in. I tried wiping it with vinegar, but it just came back darker. Is this something I can tackle myself with a stronger cleaner, or do I need to call a professional company to deal with it?

Based on your description, this is a serious situation that requires immediate professional attention. The recurring cough in your children is a significant health red flag, and the fact that the mold returned darker after a DIY attempt indicates a deeply rooted infestation that surface cleaning cannot address.

In Dubai's climate, high humidity and constant AC use create ideal conditions for Stachybotrys chartarum (black mold) to thrive inside wall cavities, especially when condensation forms on cold surfaces. Vinegar or bleach only bleaches the surface pigment, leaving the root structure intact to regrow stronger. Disturbing it through improper cleaning can also aerosolize highly toxic mycotoxins, worsening respiratory issues.

According to UAE health and safety guidelines, any mold growth exceeding one square foot, or any growth causing health symptoms, mandates professional remediation. A certified inspector will conduct air and surface sampling to identify the species and spore count, then implement a containment strategy using HEPA filtration and industrial-grade antimicrobials to safely remove the biomass and treat the source. Crucially, they will identify and rectify the moisture source—often a leaking pipe, rising damp, or AC condensation issue—to prevent recurrence.

For the safety of your family, I strongly advise against further DIY attempts. Please contact our certified team at Saniservice for a comprehensive inspection and remediation plan. Call us at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com to schedule an assessment.
