Can I remove black mold myself or need a professional?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing for a couple of weeks and I finally checked behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom and found a huge patch of black mold on the wall, probably from a hidden AC leak. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed it. Is this something I can tackle myself with bleach from ACE Hardware, or do I absolutely need to call in a professional mold removal company?

Based on my professional experience in mold remediation in the UAE, I strongly advise against attempting to remove a "huge patch" of black mold yourself, especially given the health symptoms and the likely AC leak source.
The black mold you've discovered is a significant health hazard, particularly for children. The persistent coughing is a classic symptom of mold spore exposure. Using bleach from a hardware store is ineffective and dangerous. It only bleaches the visible surface while the fungal roots (hyphae) remain deep within the wall. Furthermore, bleach is mostly water, which can actually feed the mold and cause it to regrow more aggressively. Disturbing the colony without proper containment will aerosolize millions of spores, contaminating your entire home's air supply and exacerbating respiratory issues. In Dubai's climate, where high humidity and year-round AC use create constant condensation risks, the root cause is critical. A professional inspection is absolutely necessary to identify and repair the hidden AC leak. Without addressing the moisture source, the mold will return. Our process at Saniservice involves isolating the area with negative air pressure containment, using HEPA filtration to scrub the air, applying professional-grade antimicrobial agents to eliminate the mold at its root, and finally, hygienization to ensure the space is safe for occupancy. We also provide a detailed report for your landlord, if applicable. For a contamination of this size and with health impacts already evident, this is not a DIY project. Please contact our certified team for a thorough assessment and safe remediation. Call 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com to schedule an inspection. |
