Can I remove black mold under carpet myself?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing more than usual and I just pulled back the corner of the carpet in our guest bedroom to find a bunch of black, fuzzy patches on the concrete floor underneath. It's been extra humid in the evenings for the last month and I guess the moisture got trapped. Is this something I can tackle myself with vinegar and a good scrub, or is it time to call in a professional cleaning company?

It depends on the size of the area and its cause. In the UAE's humid climate, moisture wicking up from concrete slabs is a common issue, especially in carpeted rooms with poor ventilation.

For a small patch (under one square meter), you can attempt remediation yourself. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and eye protection. Scrub the concrete with a dedicated mold cleaner, not just vinegar, which often fails on porous surfaces. Then, the critical step is to completely dry the area with fans and a dehumidifier to prevent immediate regrowth.

However, if the area is large, the mold has spread to the carpet backing, or the dampness is seeping from the slab itself, professional assessment is strongly advised. Remediation involves more than cleaning; it requires identifying and correcting the moisture source, which in Dubai is often condensation from AC units or groundwater capillary rise. A professional inspection can determine the extent and recommend solutions like moisture barriers. For health concerns, especially with children, a lab test to identify the mold species provides clarity on potential risks.
