Can I remove black shower mold myself or call a pro?« Back to Previous Page

The grout between the tiles in our master bathroom shower has started turning black, especially in the corners. We’re in an older building in Bur Dubai, and with the humidity lately, it seems to be spreading. I tried scrubbing it with bleach, but it just faded a little and came back within a week. Is this something I can tackle myself with a stronger product, or do I need to call a professional cleaning company?

The black discoloration you're observing in your Bur Dubai bathroom grout is a classic case of mold growth, a very common issue in the UAE's high-humidity climate. The persistent humidity, combined with condensation from hot showers and year-round AC use creating temperature differentials, provides an ideal environment for mold spores to thrive.

While surface-level cleaning with bleach is a common first attempt, it is often ineffective. Bleach is primarily water, which can be absorbed by the porous grout, potentially feeding the mold deeper within the material. Furthermore, bleach only removes the surface pigmentation but does not address the root hyphae (the root system) embedded in the substrate. This is why the discoloration returns so quickly.

For a small, surface-level patch, you can attempt remediation using a dedicated EPA-approved fungicidal cleaner, not just bleach. However, scrubbing can aerosolize spores, so wearing an N95 mask is crucial. If the mold returns after a proper cleaning attempt, this is a significant indicator that the growth is more extensive than surface level.

Given that you're in an older building and the growth is recurrent and spreading, I strongly recommend a professional inspection. In the UAE, improper remediation can violate certain tenancy and public health regulations if cross-contamination occurs. Our certified inspectors use moisture meters and borescopes to determine the extent of the problem behind the tiles. Often, what appears as a surface issue can indicate a deeper moisture problem within the wall cavity.
