Can I remove black shower mold or need a professional?« Back to Previous Page

The grout between the tiles in our master bathroom shower has been getting these black, speckled patches for the last couple of months, and it’s starting to spread. I tried scrubbing it with bleach, but it came back worse after a week. With the humidity here, I’m worried it’s getting out of hand. Is this something I can tackle myself with a stronger cleaner, or do I need to call in a professional company to deal with it properly?

The black patches in your shower grout are a common issue in Dubai's high-humidity climate, where condensation and constant AC use create a perfect breeding ground for mold. While often called "black mold," it's likely a surface mold like Cladosporium or Aureobasidium, which are common here but less hazardous than the infamous Stachybotrys.

Scrubbing with bleach is a common first step, but it often fails because bleach's high water content can feed the mold roots deep within the porous grout, causing it to return stronger. For a small, surface-level recurrence, you can try a dedicated, thick gel-based mold remover. Apply it, let it sit for the recommended time to penetrate deeply, then scrub. Crucially, you must address the moisture source. Run the bathroom exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower and squeegee the walls to remove standing water.

If the mold returns quickly after a proper DIY attempt or covers a large area (more than a square meter), the infestation is likely behind the tiles or within the wall. This is when professional assessment is needed. They can use moisture meters and borescopes to check for hidden dampness and perform lab testing to identify the species if there are health concerns. Remediation in such cases involves removing the affected grout, treating the substrate, and ensuring the area is completely dry before re-grouting with a high-quality, mold-inhibiting product. For persistent problems linked to AC condensation drain lines or structural humidity, a professional approach is the only way to ensure a long-term solution.
